DENTURES AND PARTIAL DENTURES

Dentures are replacements for missing teeth. Complete dentures replace all teeth and removable partial dentures replace some teeth. Prosthetics can improve facial appearance and self-confidence. Dentures may also improve speech problems caused by missing teeth and will improve chewing. The number of missing teeth and their location will affect the comfort and stability of the removable partial denture. Placement of dental implants may increase the stability and retention of a removable partial denture.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:

  1. What are digital dentures?

Digital dentures are a modern approach to designing, manufacturing, and fitting dentures using digital technology. This method leverages computer-aided design (CAD) and computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) to create highly accurate and customized dentures for patients.

  2. Can I sleep in my dentures?

It is recommended that you remove your denture for at least part of the time, during the day or night, to allow your gums and bone to "rest”. If you choose to wear your dentures at night for social reasons or to prevent your jaw from over-closing, set aside time during the day to clean your mouth and the prosthesis. Never wear your dentures all day and night without performing proper hygiene. Dentures should be cleaned and stored in water when not in use.

  3. How do I care for my new dentures?

Toothbrushing: Do NOT brush dentures with normal toothpaste, bleach-containing products, or hot water.

    1. Toothpastes often contain abrasives and chemicals that help whiten and strengthen teeth, but may damage dentures, which are made of a hard plastic.

    2. Whitening products will not be effective in changing the color of the denture teeth. Bleach can weaken the denture and cause color changes to the entire prosthesis.

    3. Dentures with metal attachments may tarnish or corrode.

    4. Hot or boiling water can cause distortion of the denture

Use a special denture brush and water with dish washing soap to clean dentures by hand to remove debris and buildup. After rinsing, soak dentures in a cleaning solution overnight.

  4. Can I eat normally with dentures?

Most patients will need to relearn how to function with dentures, including speaking and eating. It is important to be patient as you get used to them, especially when chewing sticky or harder foods. Using a small amount of denture adhesive- no more than three or four pea-sized spots per arch- may help stabilize dentures while you gain experience.
